Herein lines some of the conflict Stella will face throughout the story which will later assume a larger role internally and emotionally when she meets a young man who has not reached twenty-one years old. The need to ensure she behaves acceptably is constantly challenged in her new relationship with Winston, who at first glance appears to be a suitable match for Stella. She wrestles with the potential of the relationship, but is later swayed by the doubts from her family. By the end of 'How Stella Got Her Groove Back,' the title character resolves some of her internal questions by following her heart and finding home in Winston.
